Dr. Heckman has been practicing Orthopaedic Surgery and Sports Medicine in San Antonio since 1989 and specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of disorders of the bones, joints, and muscles primarily those affecting the knee and the shoulder. He treats athletic, non-athletic, and in-network work-related injuries in patients from adolescents to adults. In addition to performing surgery, Dr. Heckman also uses nonsurgical methods to treat his patients.

From a torn ACL to painful arthritis in the knees, these problems can lead to pain and discomfort. Dr. Heckman is proud to work towards resolving these issues through a wide array of treatment options.

Dr. Heckman is Board Certified by the American Board of Orthopedic Surgery in both Orthopedic Surgery and Orthopedic Sports Medicine. He is a fellow of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons and is a Clinical Professor for the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio.
Dr. Heckman has completed fellowship training in Orthopedic Sports Medicine, arthroscopic surgery and reconstructive shoulder and knee surgery. He specializes in knee and shoulder arthroscopy and performs total knee and total shoulder joint replacements.

He has a special interest in treating Anterior Cruciate Injuries (ACL) knee injuries and routinely performs “ACL revision” surgeries to correct complications or problems in patients who have had prior ACL surgical reconstruction or repairs.

He treats meniscal tears and multi-ligament injuries of the knee and rotator cuff tears, instability, and dislocations of the shoulder. He is involved in research on the ACL and Rotator Cuff repairs and is studying the use of biologics and stem cells in the treatment of knee and shoulder injuries.

Unlike other Orthopedic Surgery clinics, our patients will always be evaluated by Dr. Heckman or in many cases by more than one Orthopaedic surgeon. Their Orthopedic care will not be directed by a (PA) physician assistant, nurse practitioner or family practice physician.

Sports medicine is a branch of orthopedics that deals with the prevention and treatment of sports-related injuries. Orthopedic surgeons who specialize in sports medicine work with athletes of all ages, from amateurs and weekend warriors to professionals.

ACL stands for Anterior Cruciate Ligament. It’s one of the four stabilizing ligaments of the knee. The ACL is located in the middle of the knee and connects the thighbone (femur) to the shinbone tibia). It is called a “cruciate” because it forms a “cross” with the posterior cruciate or PCL.

The ACL can be injured by a sudden twisting motion, such as when you jump or change direction quickly and typically does not involve contact.

Arthroscopy is a type of minimally invasive surgery that orthopedic surgeons use to examine and treat problems inside joints. Arthroscopic surgery is often used to treat conditions such as torn ligaments, meniscal tears, damaged articular cartilage, rotator cuff tears, shoulder instability and arthritis.

Knee surgery is the term for a variety of surgical procedures that are performed on the knee. Some of the most common surgeries include arthroscopic surgery, total knee replacement, and meniscus surgery.

A knee replacement, also known as knee arthroplasty, is a surgical procedure to replace the weight-bearing surfaces of the knee joint to relieve pain and disability. It is most commonly performed for osteoarthritis, a chronic and painful degenerative condition that affects the joints.

Shoulder surgery is performed to treat a number of different conditions affecting the shoulder. It can be performed either arthroscopically or as an open procedure. The most common reasons a patient may need surgery on their shoulder include rotator cuff tears, impinging bone spurs, painful arthritis, tears of the labral cartilage and to stabilize instability or dislocation.

Viscosupplementation treatments are injections of hyaluronic acid (a naturally occurring substance in the body) into the knee joint. Hyaluronic acid is a “viscosupplement” because it thickens and lubricates synovial fluid, which is the fluid that surrounds and cushions joints. The goal of viscosupplementation therapy is to relieve pain and improve function in people with osteoarthritis of the knee.

Stem cell therapy uses your body’s own or donated stem cells as a treatment option for degenerative orthopedic and inflammatory conditions. They may also be used in surgery to provide assistance with the healing of microfractures, tendon repairs and grafts used in reconstructions.
